The Magic

Like many days along the Oregon coast fine mist turned into a steadier downpour as the winds and dark clouds moved in.

Surf pounded unrelentingly against the giant rocks.

Draping to the ankles of her little black rain boots, the bright yellow slicker felt like a royal cape as she scampered along the damp paths.

“I’d like to teach… the world to sing… in perfect harmony… I'd like to hold it in my arms, and keep it company... la la la….” Her small voice sang high above with the birds as she and her father hiked through tall dune grasses coming home from the market.

Stepping from the soft sand into the deep moist woods, their shoes crunched over gravel. Raindrops rolled through a labyrinth of leaves before falling down upon them.

Kicking through puddles, jumping over fallen branches, the slicker billowed as she twirled off a log. The bottom hem floated upward, turning into fairy wings, lifting her to soar and weave about the evergreen canopy.

Landing on the edge of a bird’s nest she looked around. In the distance the ocean rolled over the sand, crabs scurried into holes, the dune grasses bowed toward her perch. She jumped to play with ladybugs, awakening the fireflies.

She laughed summersaulting freely; her delicate dragonfly like wings brought her down, carefully setting her on the floor just as the house came into view.

Her father slowed removing something from the brown paper bag.

“Try this,” he said.

Taking the piece of candy, turning it over curiously, she brought it in for a better look; sweet aromas caused her mouth to water.

the Rolled sleeves of the oversized rain slicker exposed her hands with the stretch of her arms, and with a shrug of her shoulder the chocolate moved into her mouth.

it melted as her small toes wigged in the little black rain boots, bubbling with... Joy.
